Poem A Day: Day 12 ( etched in skin)

July 24, 2020 jedi dadLeave a comment

my identity is etched into my skin
but unlike a tattoo,
it’s not drawn in with ink.
who I am has been etched into me
by my ancestors, by codes of DNA,
and the prayers of my people.
I am so much more than the labels
society puts on me.

Poem: lost footing

September 17, 2018September 17, 2018 jedi dadLeave a comment

I can’t seem to steady my feet
no matter how hard I try.
I’m off balance, and I’ve lost my footing.
The ground beneath is crumbling,
and I fall and fall…
When I am about to give all hope,
You whisper in my ear,
” I gave you wings, now fly.”
In that instance I remember, who I am.
I fly and embrace my true identity.
